Child Observation 3 - Post 2

For this observation I choose to do my observation in the sociodramatic play area. In this observation there is 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy all are age 4. It takes place in a daycare setting.

It is free play or as this teacher likes to call it classroom exploration. All the children are free to choose what they would like to do as long as they follow classroom rules.

Two girls decide to play in the dress up, kitchen area. Both girls are mothers but do there separate thing while playing in the same area this is called parallel play. Girl A is rocking a baby and feeding it a pretend bottle. She is following the theory of Bandura by imitating the adult role. Girl B has blocks that are her baby even though their are more babies in the cradle. Girl B has a blanket laying over the wooden stove and is arranging the blocks on her blanket. She is following both Bandura and Piagets theory, imitating a adult role and pretending the blocks are a baby is Piagets theory. While the girls are playing their is a boy that is watching them play he is in an activity called onlooker because he is focused on what they are doing he makes comments but says them quietly and I cant hear him. Both girls look at him while he is talking but say nothing back. He doesn't enter the area he stays on the backside of the wooden stove and wooden washer. Girl A takes the baby out of the cradle and lays them on the floor. She then wraps her baby in a blanket and set it in the cradle. Girl A goes over to girl B who is still arranging her blocks/baby on a blanket. Girl A asks girl B "What are you doing"? Girl B says "I'm trying to wrap up my baby". The boy reaches over the stove and hits all the blocks while saying "Those are blocks not a dumb baby!" All the blocks fall to the floor. Girl B says to the boy " Get away from here you just ruined everything"! The boy wanders over to the piano and starts pounding on the keys. The teacher comes over and asks him "Please play the piano nicely". The boy looking down at the keys says "No". The teacher asks the boy "What are you upset about"? The boy says "Girl B was using the blocks as a dumb baby and I wanted the blocks". The teacher looking back at the area where the girls just were sees that they have moved onto playing with the peg boards. The blocks are still laying on the floor where they fell. The teacher says to the boy "Look the girls are playing with the peg boards would you like to go play with the blocks now". The boy looks up and smiles and then walks over to the blocks and starts playing with them by himself.
